ROMANIZED SINDHI AND WORKSHOPS
ARJAN T DASWANI SINGAPORE [19-May-2014]

AND WORKSHOPS – STORY BY Arjan T. Daswani Singapore (Founding Coordinator)

Base version of Romanized Sindhi Script was developed by late Dada Govind L Chandiramani, of Mumbai (www.Chandiramani.com) in the year 1997. In the year 2006 when Mr Arjan Daswani of Singapore was appointed as Coordinator of 14th International Sindhi Sammelan Singapore July 2007, by Alliance of Sindhi Associations of Americas, Inc (now known as Alliance of Global Sindhi Associations, Inc (AGSA)) hosted by Singapore Sindhi Association, Mr. Chandiramani requested Arjan to introduce his version of Romanized Sindhi Script to the delegates to the Singapore Sammelan. Arjan spoke with the late Mr Kishore Lala, the then Vice President of the Alliance, who promised Alliance’s support; and with the cooperation of the hosts of the Sammelan, especially Mr. Chatru Vaswani, introduced Nr Chandiramani’s version of Romanized Sindhi Script to Singapore Sammelan’s delegates. The results revealed that Romanized Sindhi script would cause corrupted pronunciations unless (at least in the beginning) it was supported by audios. Tests showed that Mr. Chandiramani’s version of Script had in it some characters that did not adapt to Microsoft’s audio file saving system. It was the same case with several Romanized Sindhi versions of scripts that were developed by many others which were floating on the net.

In the year 2008, Mr Chandiramani requested Mr. Arjan Daswani again to re-introduce his version of Roman Sindhi Script to delegates to Alliance’s 16th International Sindhi Sammelan Los Angeles July 2009. Arjan Daswani thought that the modifications on the Script were necessary to suit Microsoft’s file saving system. He consulted few qualified Sindhi professors who were kind to help. He also consulted with his newly found colleagues Dr Devendra Kodwani of UK and Col. (Ret’d) Ram Gulrajani of Chennai, who too were very kind and helped. The team took into consideration other versions of the Romanized Sindhi Script that were floating on the net and finally achieved Standardized version or Roman Sindhi Script. By this time Arjan Daswani had lost his friend Mr Kishore Lala who had left for his heavenly abode in 2007 just before Singapore Sammelan. In the year 2009, as Alliance’s Board Director, Arjan Daswani told the whole story to the President of the Alliance Dr Dayal Meshri on a long distance phone call, and explained to him the need for presentation of the Standardized Version of Roman Sindhi Script to delegates to Los Angeles Sindhi Sammelan July 2009. After getting his consent, Arjan Daswani drew up a Resolution. In absence of Arjan Daswani, his friend, Mr Mohan Dadlani, acting as Romanized Sindhi Sub Committee’s Chairman, put through the Resolution to LA Sammelan’s delegates. With the help of Dr Dayal Meshri, Mr Mohan Dadlani, Sammelan’s Chairperson Mrs Kamal Lala, and the blessings of Alliance’s Chairman Mr Prem Lalvani and other Officials, the Resolution was approved by the Sammelan’s delegates, recommending the adoption, with overwhelming majority.

Later, in the year 2010, Arjan Daswani was advised by one of the prominent Sindhi professors to organize a Summit conference of several Sindhi professors in India, in order to gain broader approval and acceptance of the Script. Arjan consulted on this with Alliance’s Chairman Mr. Prem Lalvni, who and the President, Dr. Dayal Meshri consented and promised to attend the Summit Conference. Dr Devendra Kodwani helped to rope in Dada Lakhmi Khilani, Director of Indian Institute of Sindhology Adipur and organized a Summit Conference at “SINDHU BHAVAN” Ahmedabad India on 29-30 March 2010. Several professors, linguists and senior office bearers of the Alliance and Sindhology attended the Summit Conference. After a day long discussions and deliberations, after some minor changes, Romanized Sindhi Standardized Version was unanimously approved, adopted and recommended for Global Sindhi use by ALL present.

SATISH ROHRA, INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SINDHOLOGY ADIPUR KUTCH, MR. ARJAN T. DASWANI SINGAPORE (ASAA BOARD MEMBER AND ROMANIZED SINDHI PROJECT COORDINATOR) AND MR LAKHMI KHILANI, DIRECTOR, INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SINDHOLOGY ADIPUR KUTCH. MR. GOV1ND L. CHANDIRAMANI (www.chandiramani.com MUMBAI) WAS ABSENT IN THE PHOTOGRAPH AND HIS PHOTOGRPH IS SHOWN ELSEWHERE IN THIS MESSAGE.

That was a historical event, because in 63 years after partition of India, many tried to achieve Standardized version of Romanized Sindhi, but this is the first one that was achieved unanimously and recommended for Global Sindhi use.

Immediately then Arjan Daswani organized lessons and audios which were uploaded at www.RomanizedSindhi.org at midnight of 31 December 2010.

Just before the18th International Sindhi Sammelan held at Ahmedabad in December 2011 Dada Govind Chandiramani presented Romanized Sindhi team a young charming lady, Mrs Kajal A Ramchandani, a Senior “Sindhi” lecturer in Jai Hind College, Mumbai, who has ever since been on our team of volunteers and has done great job on editing Romanized Sindhi dictionary, which is also uploaded now on www.RomanizedSindhi.org supported by audios. Kajal has also done wonderful work of introducing Romanized Sindhi workshops in conjunction with Mr Rajkumar Kukreja of Mission Shandar Sindhi and Sindhi Seva Samiti Bangalore.
