Dear Sindhi brothers and Sisters,
The partition of India in 1947 was a big blow to Hindu Sindhis, who were left with no state of their own and therefore dispersed mostly in Indian part of the sub-continent as also in many other countries of the world. This affected their culture, tradition and the language which started melting or disintegrating. Some Sindhi associations tried to retrieve the situation but this was possible only where Sindhis were in sizeable numbers. Elsewhere it was on the verge of total dissolution. Some efforts were made in India and elsewhere outside of India to consolidate several "Sindhi Panchayats and Associations" that have sprung up in many cities, but no success is yet visible and dispersal remains.
Far away in US, Sindhis joined hands more firmly and in 1989 celebrated the Silver Jubilee of Association of Chicago Sindhis. On this occasion Mr. Prem Lalvani, a founder member, initiated the idea of forming a Federation of Sindhi Associations and holding annual Sindhi Samelans. This gave birth to Alliance of Sindhi Association of Americas Inc and the first Sammelan was held in New Jersey in 1994. Annual Sammelans thereafter, were held in various cities of USA and Canada, the last one in Las Vegas in 2003. The Sammelans thereafter, went global for a larger audience and acceptance. They were held in London (2004), Mumbai (2005), Singapore (2007), Barbados (2008), Los Angles (2009), Jakarta (2010), Ahmedabad (2011) and in Dec 13-15 this year it is scheduled to be held in Indore (India). 2014 Sammelan is scheduled to be held in Malaysia. The largest attendance so far was in 1998 in Bay Area San Francisco CA with over 2200 delegates. At this time we are only hoping that the Indore Sammelan breaks the record.
In all these Sammelans, the underlying theme has been to (1) Help Sindhis meet in person (2) Establish net working with dispersed Sindhis and their associations (3) Unite all Sindhi associations globally and (4)help promote Sindhi culture, language and solve other global issues at community level.
Alliance is now renamed as Alliance of Global Sindhi Associations, Inc.

NEED TO LEARN SINDHI LANGUAGE
Because our children are obliged to learn local languages for the job opportunities, there is lack of enrolment in Sindhi teaching schools of India which have been closing down with great speed. Globally, except in Sindh, there are no facilities for them to learn Sindhi. Ignorance of our children of their own "mother tongue" is a sure sign that leads to our language becoming extinct one day and so too the identity of the community itself.
